Why people leave Descript
The picks, side by side
| Tool | What it is for | Paid plans | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut | CapCut is a free-to-start video editor with trending templates, auto subtitles, and AI tools that generate video and images. | not published | Yes. Free to start. Its homepage says you can try it online for free with no card. |
| VEED | VEED is a browser video editor with auto-subtitles, templates, AI avatars, text-to-video, and dubbing. | from $12 a month, billed yearly | Yes. The page says you can start for free, but it does not print the free limits. It lists no-watermark as a feature of the plans it sells, so free exports carry one. |
| Kapwing | Kapwing is a browser video editor for teams, with auto-subtitles, dubbing, AI tools, and a repurposing studio for clips. | from $24 a month | Yes. Free plan. 10 credits, unlimited exports with a watermark, exports up to 4 minutes at 720p, and 10 minutes of auto-subtitles. |
| Riverside | Riverside records podcasts and video remotely in 4K, then edits by transcript, finds clips with Magic Clips, and publishes. | from $29 a month | Yes. Free plan. 2 hours of separate-track recording, one time, at 720p with a watermark. Magic Clips are included. |
| Async | Async, which used to be Podcastle, records podcasts and video, edits them in a chat, and generates scenes, voices and music with third-party AI models. | from $19.99 a month | Yes. Free plan with no card. It includes one hour of media upload in total, not one hour a month. |
| Clypmint (ours) | A finished, designed edit of footage you already shot, long or short. | from $29 a month | No free plan. |

Which one to pick
CapCut. For a free editor with templates, when you still want to do the work yourself and pay nothing to start.
VEED. For a browser editor with subtitles, templates, and avatars, if a transcript is not how you want to cut.
Kapwing. For a team that wants to edit and subtitle together in a browser.
Riverside. When recording remote interviews in high quality is the job, and editing comes after.
Async. When you want recording, editing, and generated scenes in one chat-based app. Async used to be Podcastle.
Clypmint (ours). When you do not want to do the editing: you hand over footage and get a finished edit back, with graphics on the beats. Fewer clips, a paid subscription, and it edits rather than generates.
The verdict
Stay on Descript if you want to do the editing yourself, fast, by editing the transcript. Move to CapCut to start free with templates, to VEED or Kapwing for a browser editor, or to Riverside if recording the show is the job. Move to Clypmint when you want the editing done for you, with graphics, on footage you shot.
