How to edit your video to match a reference video

To match a reference video, copy its editing pattern: the caption style, the cut rhythm, the zooms, the pictures and the sound. You can measure all of that by hand in an editing app, or let Clypmint measure the reference and edit your footage to match it.

Starter is $29 a month for 120 editing credits. Pro is $89 a month for 400 editing credits. Operator is $189 a month for 900 editing credits. Agency is $499 a month for 2400 editing credits.

A Clypmint motion graphics film: kinetic type, cards orbiting a video player, platform icons, and chrome shapes on a pink field. Edited by Clypmint. It is not a mockup.

The two ways to do it

By hand, it goes like this. Watch the reference frame by frame and write down the caption font, size, colour and where the words sit. Count how often it cuts and when it punches in. Note what pops up beside the speaker, and on which words. Note the music and the sound effects. Then rebuild each of those in your editor, video after video.

With Clypmint, you send the reference instead. It measures the same things, edits your footage to match, and saves the style so your next video matches too.

Either way, copy the editing, not the video. Use your own footage, words and music, and use a reference you own or have permission to use.

How it works

  1. Pick a reference

One video whose editing you want, with a person talking to camera.

  2. Send it to Clypmint

To clone its style, paste a link from Instagram, TikTok, X, Vimeo, Facebook, Loom, LinkedIn or Reddit, or upload the file.

  3. Add your footage

The raw take you want edited to match.

  4. Check the match report

It says what matched closely, what came near, and what Clypmint cannot draw yet.

What it will not do

The limit

Copying a style is on Pro and up. A reference can be up to an hour long. YouTube blocks downloads from our servers, so upload a YouTube reference as a file. Hand-drawn art and custom 3D scenes are replaced with the closest thing Clypmint can draw.

Questions

What makes a good reference video?

One clear editing style, a person talking to camera, and up to an hour long. A short-form reference suits Shorts and ads; a long-form one suits YouTube videos.

Can I use a TikTok or an Instagram Reel as the reference?

Yes. Links from Instagram, TikTok, X, Vimeo, Facebook, Loom, LinkedIn or Reddit work. Upload YouTube videos as files.

How close will it get?

Each match comes with a short report: what matched closely, what came near, and what Clypmint cannot draw yet, such as hand-drawn art or custom 3D scenes.

Does it copy the music?

No. It can match where music and sound effects sit, but it never copies the music itself.
